Background
Introduced for 1989 as the Carrera 4, the 964 was substantially new under a silhouette that had changed little. Torsion-bar suspension gave way to coil springs, the bumpers were integrated into the body rather than bolted proud of it, and the rear spoiler was made to raise itself with road speed instead of standing permanently upright.
All-wheel drive reached the mainstream range first, with the rear-driven Carrera 2 following for 1990 alongside the Tiptronic automatic. The flat-six grew to 3.6 litres. The Turbo initially carried over the previous 3.3-litre engine before a 3.6 replaced it.
The run included an unusually large number of limited models: the Carrera RS and its US-market RS America counterpart, a Speedster, the America Roadster, and the 30 Jahre 911 marking the model's thirtieth year.
