Porsche 911 (996) — Options & Equipment

The Porsche 911 (996) was offered for the 1999–2005 model years. This page documents 128 equipment codes across 16 body styles for the United States market, grouped into 13 categories. Select a body style at left to see its specific options and standard equipment. “No charge” marks no-cost equipment and “—” marks an option whose period price has not yet been sourced. Showing 2004 prices: “Not offered” marks equipment that wasn’t on that year’s order sheet, which is different from a price we haven’t sourced.

Background

The 996 replaced air cooling with water cooling, a change driven by emissions and noise regulation and by the cooling demands of four-valve cylinder heads. It was also the first 911 developed alongside another car: the front bodywork, the interior and much of the structure were shared with the Boxster. The headlamp unit that resulted combined the main beam and the indicator in a single housing, a departure from the separate round lamps used before and after.

The engine displaced 3.4 litres at launch and 3.6 from 2002, when a facelift also revised the headlamps. The Turbo arrived for 2001 with a twin-turbocharged 3.6 derived from the GT1 racing engine, and the GT3 and GT2 established the naturally aspirated and turbocharged track-focused lines that every later generation has continued.

A Targa returned for 2002 using the sliding glass roof introduced on the 993, and a 40th Anniversary model marked the 911's fortieth year in 2004.
