Background
The 997 kept the 996's basic architecture but restyled the front, returning to round headlamps and moving the indicators down into the bumper. The interior was redesigned and no longer shared with the Boxster.
The Carrera used a 3.6-litre flat-six and the Carrera S a 3.8 — the first time the two models differed in displacement rather than only in state of tune. Porsche Active Suspension Management, an adaptive damping system, was standard on the S and optional further down the range.
The Turbo of 2007 used variable-turbine-geometry turbochargers, a technology then established on diesel engines but new to a production petrol car. The GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 continued the track-focused line.
